NPPA: Cost of Doing Business Calculator →
Just came across this great calculator. It gives a basic insight into how to calculate how much a photographer should be charging per day just to earn a living and cover expenses. Your own individual CDB may have other factors in it, but playing around with this calculator should give you a basic ballpark of prices you need to charge just to survive.

Architecture Lens Follower Photo Submission...
Hello to all Architecture Lens Followers,
I received this photo submission from one of you for critique! This is a great example to go over. Lets dive right in.
This is a tough interior to photograph. Sometimes you will be called upon to shoot a room that was designed for function… not form. And you still have to be able to come out of it with a high quality, visually stimulating...

Photographing Small Spaces; Dealing with Mirrors
In architectural and interiors photography, photographing small and tight spaces can be a tricky task. The smaller the space, often times, the wider the lens that you will need to use. Small bathrooms is typically where I will try out the Canon 17mm Tilt-Shift lens, as it is fairly necessary and can work quite well. But many times I will find that the image is just too warped, or the client...

Event: ''The Business of Architectural...
ASMP Foundation Grant presents Steve Whittaker. One of the main goals of Steve’s presentation is to give attendees a better understanding of why they need to pay close attention to the details of their contracts, and to give fellow photographers, especially emerging photographers, a better understanding of what the business of photography is all about. Risk management is a big issue in...

Architectural Term of the Week: Coffer or Caisson
A coffer, also known as a caisson, is a sunken panel in a ceiling, dome or vault. These types of ceilings can add a lot of dimension to a flat ceiling. They can be simple like in the image above, or extravagantly painted and decorated like in many Renaissance designs.

7 Reasons Why You Should Be Tethering While...
Tethering your camera to a computer offers plenty of benefits. If you are shooting with a medium or large format camera with a digital back I am sure you are already tethering at every single shoot, as the screens on modern digital backs are nowhere near trustworthy enough when it comes to color and exposure/histogram details. But even if you are shooting with a 35mm digital SLR camera, like a...

7 Things Every Architectural Photographer Should...
There are several items that truly can make a huge difference in the success of an architectural photography shoot. I only learned this from being on the job and from assisting other professionals on shoots. These items come in handy all of the time. As a photographer your job is not only to produce photographs, but to solve problems. There will always be problems… adverse conditions that...

I am going to do this once per week. I truly believe in sustainable design. I think when modern and sustainable architecture meet, magic happens. We should be designing with the future of our environment in mind. Recycling materials, conserving and recycling energy, utilizing efficient water and waste systems… All of this can reduce a structures impact on out environment, and can make for...

The Big Debate: Do You Need to Use Lighting to be...
Since the advent of digital photography, the introduction of Photoshop, and the Web 2.0 revolution, photographers have experienced a drastic change in equipment, technique, workflow and marketing. Together, those changes have created a heated debate in the photography industry. Today I find advertisements in classifieds seeking a photographer to photograph interiors for a business, with the...

Architectural Term of the Week: Adaptive Reuse
Adaptive reuse is the conversion of a building or structure that was intended for one use, to a different use. For example if an old wooden church is saved from demolition, the architectural structures that are the heart of the building are saved and restored, and the building is then used as a concert hall. This is...

anoctopussgarden asked: So I stumbled upon your blog today, and really enjoyed everything you have about Shulman. My grandfather was a Mid-century modern architect by the name of Deever Rockwell, and very good friend of Julius's. So naturally I grew up with much of the same appreciation for Shulman's work as you have. I you haven't already, check out Shulman's book: "Julius Shulman: Chicago...

les-and-moore asked: Like you, I've always been interested in architectural photography in particular. A lot of people I know feel that pictures of buildings and spaces are so cold and sterile due to the inanimate nature of the subject. But I think that's where the true challenge lies; bringing life and depth into a spiritless object. I look forward to seeing your blog progress!

A Welcoming Rant
